Vince Zampella was a towering figure in the world of video games whose work shaped much of the first-person shooter (FPS) genre and influenced interactive entertainment for decades. Born Vincent Walter Zampella II on October 1, 1970, in the United States, he became known not only for his creative vision but also for his leadership in founding and guiding some of the most successful game development studios in history. His legacy touches iconic franchises that have defined generations of players, and his sudden passing at age 55 in December 2025 marked the end of an era in modern gaming.

Zampella’s journey in video games began humbly. In the 1990s, he worked in various roles within the gaming industry, including answering phones, testing games, and contributing to early projects at companies like GameTek, Atari, SegaSoft, and Panasonic Interactive Media. These experiences gave him a practical, ground-level understanding of how games were made and what players sought in engaging experiences.

His breakthrough came as the lead designer on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, a World War II first-person shooter released in 2002 that set new standards for cinematic action and immersive gameplay. This game helped establish many mechanics and design philosophies that would carry into future FPS titles.

Infinity Ward and Call of Duty

In 2002, Zampella co-founded Infinity Ward with his longtime collaborator Jason West and another partner, Grant Collier. It was here that he, along with his team, began work on Call of Duty, a game released in 2003 that redefined the military shooter genre. Originally set during World War II, Call of Duty blended cinematic storytelling with tightly crafted multiplayer combat. The franchise quickly grew into one of the most successful and influential in gaming history.

Under Zampella’s leadership, Infinity Ward released several landmark installments of Call of Duty, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, which forever altered expectations for narrative, pacing, and multiplayer depth in shooter games. Call of Duty went on to sell more than 500 million copies worldwide, becoming a cultural and commercial force that expanded into competitive gaming, merchandise, and multimedia adaptations.

Respawn Entertainment and New Horizons

After a high-profile split from Activision in 2010, during which Zampella and West faced lawsuits and industry drama, the two founders launched Respawn Entertainment. This new studio, later acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2017, became a fertile ground for creativity and innovation.

At Respawn, Zampella helped oversee the development of several critically and commercially successful franchises:

  • Titanfall (2014) and Titanfall 2 brought fast-paced mech combat and fluid mobility to FPS gameplay, carving out a passionate fanbase.
  • Apex Legends (2019) reimagined the battle royale genre with a squad-based focus, innovative communication tools like its ping system, and seamless cross-platform play. The game became a defining title in live-service gaming and esports.
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) and its sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor showcased Respawn’s range beyond shooters, blending exploration, narrative depth, and action-adventure mechanics within the beloved Star Wars universe.

Throughout this period, Zampella’s role expanded beyond creation to leadership and mentorship, guiding teams, fostering collaboration, and influencing EA’s broader development initiatives.

Later Roles and Impact on Battlefield

In the later years of his career, Zampella also took on broader responsibilities within EA, including involvement with the Battlefield franchise. After the mixed reception of Battlefield 2042, he worked to help revitalize the series, including leadership contributions to Battlefield 6. This effort demonstrated his continued relevance and influence in a genre he helped define.

Tragically, Vince Zampella’s life and career were cut short on December 21, 2025, when he died in a car accident on the Angeles Crest Highway north of Los Angeles. The vehicle he was in left the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Zampella and another occupant of the car both lost their lives in the crash.

The news of his death sent shockwaves through the gaming world and beyond. Tributes poured in from fans, developers, and industry leaders alike, honoring his visionary contributions and the countless memories his games provided to players around the globe. Electronic Arts described Zampella as “a friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator” whose influence on the industry was “profound and far-reaching.”

What makes Vince Zampella’s career particularly remarkable is not only the commercial success of his projects but also how deeply they impacted game design and interactive storytelling.
